ECONOMIC IMPACT STUDY REPORTS SIGNIFICANT FINANCIAL IMPACT OF EVENTS ON CITY OF DAWSON CREEK
Dawson Creek, British Columbia: The 2019 Economic Impact Study managed and compiled by Sport Tourism Canada (formerly the Canadian Sport Tourism Alliance) on behalf of Spectra Venue Management reported overall visitor spending resulting from hosting events at the Encana Events Centre as just under $6.7 million dollars which contributed a total economic activity of $14.2 million dollars to the local economy.
“This report is a significant demonstration of how important the Event and Sport Tourism Strategy is for Dawson Creek, and shows how greatly it impacts the economy of the City and region as a whole, “stated Mayor Dale Bumstead.
The main objective of this year-long project was to not only determine the overall economic impact the Encana Events Centre has on the community of Dawson Creek by hosting various events throughout the year, but also included the impact from the overall operation of the venue. The visitor expenditures attributable to the economic impact were compiled through data collection both during and after events were held from guests and user groups.
“Spectra and the Encana Events Centre have proved themselves time and time again that this facility and the City of Dawson Creek can host local, national and international events and create a positive economic impact to the region”, said Spectra’s Dustin Bodnaryk, General Manager of the Encana Events Centre. “The facility itself is a huge economic generator for businesses within Dawson Creek whether it be hosting meetings, banquets, special events, large concerts, or world class sporting events”.
It should be noted that in order to ascertain an accurate sampling of data which could then be used as a benchmark of a typical event year, the study reported the economic impact of the World Junior A Challenge separately. The full compliment of results can be found in the attached report.
Highlights of the Economic Impact of the Encana Events Centre (2019):
- Meetings in Coop Mercer Hall comprised (28%) of all the events held at the Encana Events Centre, while Special Events were second with 22%, and Banquets third at 13%
- It was determined that 24,606 people were visitors to Dawson Creek specifically to attend an event at the Encana Events Centre
- Overall visitor spending directly attributable to the 29 events was just under $6.7 million.
- The total net economic activity (GDP) generated in 2019 by the Encana Events Centre was: $10.6 million for Canada as a whole; $9.4 million for the province of British Columbia; $6.7 million of the city of Dawson Creek.
- Visitor spending during the 2019 World Junior A Hockey Championship attributed to $622,898.
